A 40F bra fits a 40 inch underband with a seven inch difference between your underbust and the fullest part of your bust. At this size the band carries most of the support, so a firm, level fit across your back matters far more than the straps do.
Our 40F bras run to Fantasie, Elomi, Panache, Freya and Goddess, in underwired, non wired, moulded and strapless shapes, all held in UK stock. If the band feels loose, try 38FF. If it digs in, 42E gives you the same cup volume on a bigger band.
Non Wired 40F Bras
A 40F is well served by non wired styles because the wide band gives the cups something to anchor to. Look for a deep underband, firm side panels and a higher centre gore, which together do the job a wire would otherwise do. Royce and Triumph both cut wire free bras in this size.
Strapless and Moulded Shapes
Strapless is the hardest style to get right at a 40F, and the band is the reason it works or fails. A silicone-lined underband and wide side wings keep it level without straps. Moulded and t-shirt cups give a smooth line under close fitting tops, and side support styles bring tissue forward for a rounder shape.
40F Sports Bras
For running or high impact training, an underwired encapsulation sports bra controls a 40F better than a compression crop top, which flattens rather than supports. Shock Absorber, Panache Sport and Freya Active all go up to this size.
Getting the Band Right at a 40
A 40F band should sit level and feel firm on the loosest hook, leaving you room to tighten as the elastic gives. If it rides up at the back, the band is too big rather than the cups too small. Measure snugly under the bust, then loosely across the fullest point: seven inches between the two puts you in an F cup. Our fitting guide and the bra size calculator will confirm it before you order.
